Smoke detectors now compulsury
With effect from 1 July 2022, it is mandatory to have a smoke detector on every floor of your home. This increases safety and gives you a warning in the event of smoke or fire.
The main requirements:
- It must be a smoke detector that lasts at least ten years
- You hang the smoke detector in the hall; on the ceiling; at least 50 cm from a corner or wall; at least 30 cm from a lamp
- Smoke detectors should not be hung in front of a ventilation opening or heating
- Read and follow the smoke detector's instructions for use
As a homeowner or landlord, you are responsible for installing smoke detectors. These must meet the requirements and there must be enough of them. The tenant is responsible for the interim maintenance.
